Making Boards Better

Our Philosophy

We Believe…

Every board and every board member wants to do good work

Non-paid boards and their board members work for the betterment of others, not themselves.

Every board and every board member should strive to improve

Improvement is the cornerstone of every successful organization. Maintaining status-quo is not acceptable to patrons, communities of interest, staff or the board.

Improvement must be deliberate and continuous

Continuous improvement takes deliberate, coordinated and regular effort. Setting a baseline is important to define desired outcomes – operational efficiencies, behaviors, goals, outcomes, and mutual expectations. As board composition, leadership, and issues change, the dynamics of a board necessarily change. Therefore, the time for board development is ALWAYS.

An efficient, high functioning board empowers a staff

Staff is empowered to make decisions and manage effectively when it knows that the board functions well, is efficient, carries out its duties with a deliberate and positive plan and is appropriately focused.

Adding an objective viewpoint encourages thoughtful change

Implementing change can be difficult. Continuous, deliberate improvement is most difficult, but is the hallmark of a highly effective board. Without a catalyst, the process can stagnate.

Don’t let your behavior define your role.
Let your role define your behavior.
